York University Lions women's track and field athlete Alexandra Quaidoo and men's basketball player Jackson Mackinnon-Metcalf have been named the final York athletes of the week for 2024, spanning the period from Nov. 25-Dec. 1.
Mackinnon-Metcalf, a first-year guard from Halifax, N.S., had a pair of breakout games for the Lions as they split their final two games of the fall term. He set a career high with 22 points in Friday's loss to Queen's, while also pulling down six boards. He then posted 13 points and another six rebounds in York's come-from-behind win over the Guelph Gryphons on Saturday. The health studies major was not only effective, but efficient, going 16-for-25 from the field (64.0%) on the weekend.
Mackinnon-Metcalf and the Lions begin the winter term on Jan. 8 in St. Catharine's against the Brock Badgers.
Quaidoo, a fourth-year sprinter and business & society major, had a solid weekend on home turf at the York Holiday Open. The multi-sport athlete who is also a key cog of the Lions women's soccer team finished second in 60m prelims with a time of 7.84 secs, and followed that up by winning gold in the 60m main race, outdoing her prelim time with a time of 7.79 secs. The Leduc, Alta., native followed that up by capturing the 300m sprint in 42.46 secs, winning a photo finish over Ciara Clifton of Brock by 0.01 seconds.
Quaidoo and the Lions will now enjoy the holiday break before resuming their season at the Sharon Anderson Memorial Meet at Toronto on Jan. 4.
